Did the mediumistic phenomena begin with Spiritism?

No, mediumistic phenomena have always existed. Mediumship is the inherent faculty of the human species, communication between the two planes of life has always been known since time immemorial. However, he had to undergo a slow and gradual process of evolution, whose history accompanies the very evolution of the Spirit. The first inhabitants of the planet called god anything that presented any supernatural characteristic, anything that escaped their understanding, such as phenomena of nature and even abilities perceived in another individual that distinguished him from others. As a result, they rendered them cults and, because they lacked the moral and intellectual sense developed, primitive peoples offered to the gods human sacrifices and animal sacrifices, as well as offerings of the fruits of the earth. Such cults were marked by psychic and magical practices that lasted for millennia.

Through reincarnation experiences, man learns to use his spiritual energy, extracting elements of the universal cosmic fluid, elaborating and perfecting his mechanisms of expression and communication, among themselves and with the inhabitants of the spiritual world. The civilizatory process itself begins, which has the power to modify the face of the Planet. The evolutionary process was not, of course, performed exclusively by the individual, always supported by the higher intelligences, allowing the spiritual body (perispirit) to perfect itself as well, and as a result produced a physical vehicle capable of raising higher flights. As the Spirit evolves through innumerable reincarnations, naturally his perceptive faculties are enlarged, he learns to refine the waves of thought, for the human psyche is better structured. Through tuning, it emits vibrations that attract the thoughts and ideas of similar spirits, incarnate and disembodied.

In the book Evolution in two worlds, André Luiz affirms that the intuition was the initial system of interchange. The spiritual being realizes that the mind is the key to everything, it guides all the evolutionary needs of the spirit. Thought, a creative force, involves the minds within their range of action, but also, by the mechanisms of reciprocity, is influenced by spirits, incarnate and discarnate, superior and inferior. Seeking to make a historical synthesis of the Mediunity, we bring the sequence mentioned in the Mediunidade: Study and Practice, edited by the Brazilian Spiritist Federation, whose content was inspired by three spiritist works: Evolution in two worlds, by the Spirit André Luiz, psychography by Francisco Cândido Xavier , FEB; On the way to the light, of the Spirit Emmanuel, psychography of Francisco Cândido Xavier, FEB; and Spirit and Time - Anthropological Introduction of Spiritism, by Herculano Pires. Edicel Publishing House.

• Primitive means: intuition is the initial mediumship; the medium is idolatrous; loves or fears the forces of nature, named as "gods": sun, sky, moon, stars, rain, trees, rivers, fire, human being that stands out in the community.

• Tribal mediumship: a collective psychic mentality develops: group belief in spirits or gods. The conceptions of heaven-father (the creator or the fecundator) and the mother earth (the generatrix, which was fertilized by the creator) appear.

• Fetishism: A more refined form of tribal mediumship, featuring strong psychic coloring, fetish worship, or material objects that represent Divinity or Spirits. The figure of the healer or sorcerer appears, highly respected and revered, loved and feared by the other members of the tribe or clan. At some point, these practices unfolded in others, known today: voodoo and black magic.

• Mythological mediunism: mediumistic practice is characterized by the presence of myths (narrative symbolism of the creation of the universe and beings) and by magic (mediumistic and psychic practices with a strong ritualistic connotation).

• Oracular mediunism: it is the mediumship that appears in the period of human history considered as the beginning of civilization: it is polytheistic and religious. Worshiped by society, the gods (Spirits) are part of a hierarchical society, where there is a greater god (Zeus), who live in specific places (Olympus). Such gods are immortal, powerful, but have passions typical of mortal men: hatred, love, rancor, compassion. Each god governs a part of the earth or terrestrial beings. The oracles are the core of all human activity, nothing is done without consulting them. Greece becomes the center of the oracular mediumship, the oracle of Delphi being the most famous - the oracle can represent the divinity (who speaks by direct voice), could be incarnated in a medium, or temporarily occupy his body to to manifest; but may use a temple object (eg, statue), elements of nature, or manifest naturally to the medium, then called the pythoness, in the form of a psychic or bodily domain.

• In antiquity, according to Emmanuel, mediumship has the following characteristics:

• External or exoteric face - polytheistic, theatrical, superstitious, full of magic, intended for public demonstrations.

• Inner or esoteric face - of monotheistic essence, involving degrees of arduous initiation, and practiced within temples by mediums (magicians, pythonesses, etc.), generically called "initiates", who are kept under the supervision of priests.

In fact, the mediumistic practice of the beginning of time came more prominently not only among the Greeks, but also among other Greeks, Egyptians, Hindus, and Jews. When we look at the Bible, we see mediumship as something natural and exuberant, prophetism was the mediumship that stood out most and was important for the emergence of the first known religion, Judaism. According to Leon Denis, Israel's prophetism lasted more than 20 consecutive centuries.

Let us also remember the unique figure of Moses, the possessor of great mediumship and powerful spiritual resources. To him God granted the mission to bring to the material world the Ten Commandments of the Divine Law.

The very day of Pentecost, contained in the Acts of the Apostles, 2: 1 to 13, is characterized as the greatest known mediumistic act, marking the beginning of the mediumship practice itself.

Everything happens in the proper time and according to the understanding of humanity. Spiritism did not create the mediumistic phenomena, but it came to explain them, to remove the veil over what had hitherto been unknown. Considering that things are gradually being defined, through time, not showing up in its completeness, we can say that the whole past was as a preparation for the future advent of Spiritism.

Finalized the question, therefore, with the opportune words of the "Gospel according to the Spiritism":

"... all knowledge must be proportionate to the intelligence of the one to whom it is directed, because there are people whom a very bright light dazzles without clarifying them ... But what prudence has to conceal momentarily must, sooner or later, be discovered , because, upon reaching a certain degree of development, men themselves seek the living light; darkness weighs them down ... All that is hidden will be revealed one day, and what man can not yet understand on earth, will be revealed successively in the more advanced worlds, and when he is purified; in this world, it is still in the fog.
